Clara Steuermann (née Silvers)--born in Los Angeles, she received her music education (B.A. & M.A.) from the University of California at Los Angeles, where she was a teaching assistant to Schoenberg. She studied piano with Jakob Gimpel in Los Angeles. She also studied with, and later (1949) married the pianist and Schoenberg student Edward Steuermann. She worked in New York for Carl Fischer, the Music Publishers Holding Corporation, the Juilliard School, and the New York Philharmonic. She became a librarian in 1964 (graduating from Columbia University) and worked at Kingsborough Community College, the Juilliard School, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and finally the Arnold Schoenberg Institute, where she was archivist (1975-1981) until her death.
